REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- 80 percent of increased natural disasters were caused by hydrology, meteorology and climate. Head of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Andi Eka Sakya, said according to the data, the disasters had claimed lives of about 45 percent and lost property of 79 percent.
"Observing these conditions, BMKG builds and develops early warning systems of meteorology and climatology" he said, in a press release, Tuesday (18/11).
Andi explained, this system was expected to improve weather and climate information services to be precisely accurate and easily understood by stakeholders. There are factors that caused disaster risk, namely people can not understand a risk of disasters and vulnerability of nature with global warming.
"And lack of early warning systems that can work better," he added.
He said, weather and climate information delivered by BMKG is very important for maritime, agriculture, food security, environment, and health sector. However, he also admitted that the delivery of information carried by BMKG was still limited in the accuracy.
"BMKG will continue to improve the accuracy of weather and climate observations," he said.
