REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia recorded a surplus of US$1.74 billion in its international trade in June, 2018, despite a decline in exports, the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) said. Head of the BPS Suhariyanto told reporters here on Monday the country's exports in June were valued at US$13 billion down 19.80 percent from the previous month with imports even shrinking deeper by 36.27 percent to US$11.26 billion in the same period.

"Our trade balance in June, 2018 still gave us a surplus of US$1.74 billion . The surplus rose significantly from US$1.11 billion in the same months in 2016 and US$1.67 billion in 2017," Suhariyanto said.

Suhariyanto said the decline in exports and imports in June, 2018 was normal with the long holidays during the Ied ul Fitr celebration that took place that month. He said the surplus in June was attributable to a US$2.14 billion surplus in the trade of commodities other than oil and gas when deficit was recorded at US$393 million in oil and gas trade.

Cumulatively in the January-June period, a deficit of US$1.02 billion was recorded in the country's trade balance with exports valued at US$88.02 billion and imports valued at US$89.04 billion.

In 2018, surplus in Indonesia's trade was recorded only in March and June with deficit recorded in January, February, April and may. Trade in non-oil/gas commodities left the country a surplus of US$4.3 billion but the surplus was not enough to offset a bigger deficit in the oil and gas trade.

Indonesia recorded surpluses of US$4.1 billion in trade with the United States, US$3.96 billion in trade with India US$1.33 billion with the Netherlands.

The biggest deficit by countries was US$8.3 billion in trade with China, US$2.4 billion with Thailand and US$1.27 billion in trade with Australia.
