GP Ansor should avoid practical politics: Observer

GP Ansor belongs to Indonesia, not Jokowi nor Prabowo, political observer says.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MAKASSAR — Political observer at Alauddin Makassar Islamic State University, Firdaus Muhammad advised the Nahdlatul Ulama's Ansor Youth Movement (GP Ansor) to avoid practical and pragmatic politics ahead of general election. Moreover, the organization has a long history since the struggle of Indonesian independence.

“GP Ansor must avoid practical and pragmatic politics, because the organization has a full attitude in political position,” Firdaus said on Wednesday (Nov 7).

By not taking side, GP Ansor the organization would be more accepted by the public, he said. However, it did not close the opportunities for its cadres to have political choice.

He also reminded that Barisan Ansor Serba Guna (Banser) youth wing that GP Ansor belongs to Indonesia. He called on Banser to maintain the position.

"Banser does not belong to Joko Widodo, Prabowo Subianto or politicial parties," Firdaus remarked.

Meanwhile, GP Ansor Makassar chairman Muhammad Harun said political contest should not be seen in win and lose perspective. Politics is a matter of strategy, he said.

"When politicians only care about winning, a sense of personal arrogance will come up. It will make the losing camp to feel down and it can bring up other problems,” Harun said.

Harun said post-political contestation should be seen as how to become a position of a political figure or opponent as a strategic partner for winners, rather than being an opponent to bring forth the seeds of disputes that actually do not exist. Those figures should be strategic partners and give contribution to regions and country.
