REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and hail hit several areas in Yogyakarta City and Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region. As a result, dozens of trees fell, dozens of houses were damaged and several power lines were cut.

The DIY Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) recorded reports of hail occurring at a number of points in DIY including Jogoyudan, Jetis, Yogyakarta, Girikerto City, Turi District, Sleman; C Simanjuntak Street, Yogyakarta City; Murangan, Triharjo, Sleman; and the UGM area, Sleman.

The Yogyakarta Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed the hail. BMKG stated that the hail was caused by the growth of cumulonimbus clouds.

"That's right. It has been observed that hail has occurred in the District of Turi (Sleman) and the City of Yogyakarta," said Head of the Sleman Climatology Station, Reni Kraningtyas in a written statement in Yogyakarta, Wednesday.

According to Reni, there is still a high potential for hail to occur during the rainy season, especially during the transition period. "This hail is very local (radius 2 kilometers) caused by the growth of cumulonimbus clouds of more than 10 kilometers," she said.

Reni explained when the air is warm, humid, and unstable on the earth's surface, the effect of intensive global warming due to solar radiation will lift the air mass into the atmosphere which then experiences cooling.

After the condensation occurs, water droplets are formed which appear as cumulonimbus (Cb) clouds. Due to the strong upward push energy during the convection process, the cloud tops are so high that they reach the freezing level where large enough ice crystals are formed.
