REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Minister of Investment or Head of the Investment Coordination Board (BKPM) of Indonesia, Bahlil Lahadalia reminded Tiktok not to conduct a business monopoly in the country. The statement was in response to TikTok's announcement that it would apply for an e-commerce license to continue TikTok Shop's operational.

“It's for TikTok, if it's medsos (social media) then stay medsos, don't monopolize the commerce as well,” he told reporters after attending the BNI Investor Daily Summit 2023 in Jakarta, Wednesday (25/10/2023).

He added that if it wants to apply for a license as an e-commerce, Tiktok must meet a number of conditions according to government regulations. Even so, he said, permission would not be granted immediately.

“We'll see if some are okay, some aren't,” he said.

It was previously rumored that Tiktok CEO Shou Zi Chew wants to meet Indonesia President Joko Widodo in the first week of November 2023. The information was revealed by Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs (Menkop) Teten Masduki. He also said that the president asked the CEO of Tiktok to meet with Menkop first to discuss the future of Tiktok Shop.

In response, Bahlil admitted that he did not know about the Tiktok CEO's plans to meet with the president and Menkop. Only, he insists, all permits must go through online single submission (OSS) under his authority at the Ministry of Investment.

“I don't know about it yet. If you want to meet Mr. Menkop then go ahead, but permission is in the Ministry of Investment's OSS,” he said.

It is explained that, based on Permendag 31 of 2023, social media platforms and e-commerce should be separated. Then companies that want to open an e-commerce in the country must be establish an office in Indonesia and obtain permission from the government.

In addition to Kemenkop, the procedure for the establishment of e-commerce must pass through three ministries; the Ministry of Investment/BKPM, the Ministry of Communications and Informatics, and the Ministry of Trade.
