“In particular, as an instrument of poverty alleviation and job creation,” the Vice President said during a speech at the inauguration of the Indonesian Charity Room at the Vice President's Palace, Jakarta, Tuesday (14/5/2024), which was monitored online.

He stated that the management of sharia social funds such as zakat, infak, alms, and waqf (ziswaf) has contributed positively to the economy through a fair and sustainable distribution of wealth. “The distribution of zakat, for example, is not only aimed at meeting people's needs, but is also directed to provide more sustainable benefits,” the Minister said.

The vice president said in 2023 the National Amil Zakat Agency (Baznas) reported that the management of zakat as an instrument of poverty alleviation had been successfully felt by 21 thousand beneficiaries belonging to the extreme poor.

“This success certainly needs to be supported by strengthening the professionalism, governance, and accountability of sharia fund management institutions,” the Wapres said.

In his speech, the Vice President also delivered several directives to encourage the utilization of ziswaf.

First, he said, it spurs the escalation of ziswaf fund-raising through digitization and improving literacy. He said digitalization in the sharia social fund sector can be a catalyst for fund management agencies in simplifying the process of distributing and reporting funds.

“Increasing people's literacy through socialization and education activities will increase community participation in raising funds,” the Wapres said.

Secondly, he added, optimize the distribution and usability of ziswaf funds by developing various innovations on distribution schemes. “Increase the innovation of distribution schemes to suit the needs of beneficiaries such as the provision of educational assistance, job training and irrigation waqf,” the Minister said.

Third, continue to strengthen synergies with related ministries/institutions, including the National Committee on Sharia Economics and Finance (KNEKS), Baznas, and the Indonesian Waqaf Agency (BWI), as well as zakat management agencies and other waqaf institutions.
