REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- Australia's efforts to get Indonesia to postpone the execution of two of its nationals on death row, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, should not hamper law enforcement in the country, according an international law expert.
"The enforcement of the death penalty is Indonesia's sovereignty and other countries cannot intervene in the matter, Yogyakarta Indonesian Islamic University's international law expert Jawahir Thontowi said here on Monday.
According to him, the death penalty is Indonesia's effort to prevent it from becoming a victim of drugs, which mostly come from other countries.
"Every day, no less than 24 young people die of narcotics abuse in Indonesia, so it is necessary that the death penalty is implemented in the country," Jawahir noted.
He stated it was necessary for the President to declare that Indonesia was in a state of drug emergency and wage a war against narcotics offenders.
