REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian government has set a target to make the country free from prostitution in 2019, according to Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa.

"All areas of Indonesia will be made free from prostitution in 2019, and the country will also be free from street children (anjal) and vagrant beggars (gepeng) in 2017," the minister noted in a written statement on Wednesday.

The provincial and district heads of social service offices have been invited to set a target and make technical calculations to handle anjal and gepeng in 2017, Parawansa stated.

Based on the calculations, 168 areas still have brothels and the highest potential for the presence of anjal and gepeng, remarked Minister Parawansa.

The social affairs minister pointed out that in order to make the country free from prostitution, the government has prepared numerous programs to handle former commercial sex workers.

"The government, through the Ministry of Social Affairs, will offer vocational training to former commercial sex workers to develop skills, such as sewing, embroidery, baking, hairdressing, and salon services," Parawansa noted.
