REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesia`s Vice President Boediono left on Tuesday for Iran to attend a Non-aligned Movement conference on August 30-31. Yet, as reported by the Hindu online on Tuesday, Foreign Ministers from NAM members states are set to discuss issues like peaceful use of atomic energy at their crucial meet that began in Tehran on Tuesday.

"On the sidelines of the conference the vice president will also conduct bilateral meetings with a number of high ranking officials from other countries," vice presidential spokesman Yopie Hidayat said on Monday.

Boediono and delegation including his wife, Herawati, left at 7am from Halim Perdanakusumah airport aboard air force presidential aircraft Boeing 737-400. Representatives from 120 member countries, 17 observer countries and 10 international organizations will attend the 16th conference in Iran.

From occupation to nuclear issue 

The Hindu reported, the two-day NAM Ministerial Conference is to review the draft document that would be adopted at the end of the 16th Summit of their leaders, which is slated for August 30-31. The draft statement includes issues like fight against imperialism and racism, avoiding occupation and military aggression against Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) states, stressing on the need for a world free of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction and respecting the rights of all countries across the globe to pursue peaceful use of nuclear energy. The document has been ratified by experts of some 120 NAM member states.

The NAM was established following the Asian-African Conference on April 18, 1955 in Bandung, West Java, which was attended by leaders from 29 former colonial countries in Asia and Africa in the spirit of unity and solidarity to meet the new era of independence.

In 1964 77 members of the NAM set up a G-77 group which later developed a South-South cooperation to prioritize on international economic and development cooperation. The group members have now totaled 131 countries.
