REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, CILACAP - Government discussed the draft of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) detailed the protection of Indonesian migrant workers, Indonesian Minister of Manpower and Transmigration, Muhaimin Iskandar, said. The discussion is following the demand from Saudi Arabia for Indonesian migrant workers.
"We are discussing the draft of MoU," Iskandar said on Monday. Indonesia imposed a moratorium on sending workers to Saudi Arabia effective August 1, 2011. The moratorium can be ended after Indonesia and Saudi Arabia sign MoU on the protection of migrant workers and establish joint task force.
The MoU will regulate the minimum wage of 4.5 million IDR for Indonesian workers, protection, work insurance and holidays. Government will still impose the moratorium if Saudi Arabia fail to conduct the requirements. "Without then, no way," he emphasized.
However, he said that the ministry had not planned to cease moratorium. The ministry will also tighten requirements for Indonesian workers. Each worker must pass 200 hours qualification training.
Government also decrease the sending of informal workers. "The number is still high. About 40 percent are working in informal sector, the rest is in industrial sector," he said.
