Earlier, Indonesian National Shipowners Association (INSA) stated that domestic navy needed ship with the capacity of 3,000 - 5,000 TEUs. The busiest route in Indonesia is Jakarta-Belawan and Surabaya-Makassar which usually use ship under 2,000 TEUs.

The biggest problems in Indonesian sea transportation are the unbalance cargo flows and the lack of port facilities. Chairman of INSA, Carmelita Hartoto, expressed her expectation that Indonesia upgrade ports' efficiency.
