REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesian government decided to reopen import of three commodities to stabilize prices which began to surge. The three commodites are red onions, chili peppers and beef.
Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs, Hatta Rajasa explained, based on monitoring of Statistics Indonesia, there was an increase in demand of red onion due to insufficient supply and late harvest to August. Such condition led to price increase of onions nearly 50 percent at traditional markets.
"Therefore we open the import of three commodities untill the harvest time comes. Ministry of Trade has entered the data, so the price would be stable," Rajasa said after a meeting in his office on Wednesday.
For chili peppers, Indonesia experienced a supply shortage caused by decling production. The chili pepper import will start soon. State owned logistic firm, Bulog, will handle the beef import. Soekarno Hatta Airport and Tanjung Priok Port will be the entry points of 3,000 tons of quota.
