REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) has projected that Indonesia's energy consumption will increase to 2,518 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMBOE) in 2030.
"With the average economic growth forecast at 7.1 percent per year until 2030, energy needs will increase by an average of 4.7 percent per year," noted Adiaso, Director of the agency's technological center for industrial resources development, at the launch of Energy Outlook 2013, here on Monday.
In line with industrial growth, which affected transportation growth, he predicted that the country's final energy consumption, which stood at 1,043 MMBOE in 2011, will increase to 2,518 MMBOE in 2030.
The industrial sector will most likely be the biggest energy consumer; its share is expected to increase to 42 percent in 2025 from 37 percent in 2011, he explained.
The transportation sector, which supports national economic growth, will become the second largest consumer, he predicted.
"The growth of energy consumption in the transportation sector will not be very fast up to 2015. It will account for 27 percent of the national energy consumption. Post that, it will increase significantly to 33 percent in 2025," he said.
In line with the government's policy to increase the added value of minerals starting 2014, pursuant to Law No. 4/2009, he added that domestic energy needs, particularly coal consumption, will increase.
"Most of the energy supplied to the mineral processing industry will rely on coal as primary energy to generate electrical power," he clarified.
The BPPT has projected primary energy supplies will increase 2.6 times to 3,781 MMBOE in 2030 from 1,446 million MMBOE in 2011. In 2030, oil and gas will play a declining role, while coal and other new, renewable energy will be in demand.
