REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MAMUJU - Endangered bird species, Maleo in Central Mamuju district, West Sulawesi is at risk to extinction. Staff of West Sulawesi Governor, Jamil underlined the importance to preserve the species.
"The Maleo bird is now at risk to extinction because of damaged habitats," he said recently.
Regulation is necessary to protect Maleo. Mateng district as one of Maleo habitats in West Sulawesi plans to write local regulation to prevent people to take the bird's egg.
Mateng district also plans to prepare forest areas as new protected habitats for the bird. Jamil also warned people to protect mangrove forest as part of nature conservations. Now it is not easy to find Maleo population in its habitat. Usually, Maleo habitats could be found in Tanjung Labuang Patagang, Kambunong village, Budong-Budong and Mateng district.
