REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Indonesian chicken breeders are not ready to face competition in the 2015 Asian Economic Community (AEC) due to high feeding production costs, the National Poultry Association, Gapanas believed.

"These chicken breeders are not ready to compete in the ASEAN Community because of the high feeding costs, which limits the breeders' capacity in developing their business," said Khalik, one of the association members, on Thursday.

The competition in the ASEAN Economic Community will be pretty tight when a promising foreign businessmen offers them opportunities. Then they will be competing directly in the livestock business.

"If local farmers cannot compete, then they will end up as spectators and their workers will take up jobs with foreign owned companies," he said.

Currently, the majority of local chicken farms are out of business because of limited capital and maintenance efforts to feed the chicken.

"Currently, only 30 percent of local farmers still survive, while the rest are controlled by foreign businessmen," Khalik added.

In this context, the government must find a solution to reduce the chicken feeding cost production that is more affordable.

"The government should push the price down of chicken feed raw material that is imported from other countries, if this matter is resolved the new farmers can compete in the ASEAN Economic Community 2015," Khalik said.
