Cigarette triggers inflation in December

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Statistics Agency stated that cigarette triggered inflation in December. Inflation in 2014 fell from 8.38 percent in 2013 to 8.36 percent in 2014.

"Cigarette contributes to 0.15 percent of inflation," Head of Statistics Agency, Suryamin, said on Friday, January 2. 

In December 2014, other goods contributing to inflation in foodstuff sector are food, beverage and tobacco. In total, foodstuff contributes to 1.96 percent of inflation. Food inflation stood at 2.69 percent, alcohol beverage stood at 0.95 percent, while tobacco stood at 0.70 percent.

Cigarette also the second most significant cause of poverty. People live in cities consume more cigarettes than those who live in rural. Based on the agency, about 11.18 percent of people living in cities consume cigarette, while people in rural who consume cigarette only 9.39 percent.
