REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno said rice prices at several markets in Jakarta capital was rising by more than 10 percent. He said, it was due to weak supply caused by the disruption of distribution flow.
"At some markets which are categorised as red markets rice prices have risen by more than 10 percent," Sandiaga said at City Hall, Jakarta, on Tuesday (January 9).
Sandiaga explained, the price of rice was originally at Rp11,000. Currently, the price of rice had been close to Rp12,000.
He assessed, rice prices would have very negative impact. Moreover, it actually happened in the rice consumed by the middle to lower class.
Sandiaga promised to held an emergency meeting to address rice prices in Jakarta. He planned to visit several markets directly to ensure the other food price remain stable.
"There are several markets in East Jakarta that we monitored and also in Kebayoran Lama in South Jakarta and some other markets that show anomalies in terms of rice prices," Sandiaga added.
As Chairman of Indonesian Market Traders Association (APPSI), Sandiaga urged traders not to hold rice stock. He asked traders to sell stock at their warehouse. "No need for hoarding," he said.
