REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The founder of demography organization in the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia (UI), Professor Dr Widjojo Nitisastro, passed away on Friday, March 9, 2012 at 02.25 on local time in Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital. He died in age 84 because of illness.
The professor was being laid to rest in Bukit Golf Utama PE 3, Pondok Indah, South Jakarta. He was dispatched to Masjid Sunda Kelapa at 10.30. Then on 13.30 after Friday prayer, he rest in Bappenas Building where handover state is conducted. The state funeral, lead by Vice President Boediono, in Kalibata was approximately held at 16.30.
The Malang, East Java born man is formerly known as the main economic architect in New Order, he was appointed as Minister of Development Planning on 1971-1973 and Coordinating Minister for Economy, Finance, and Industry and also the Head of Indonesian National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas).
Widjojo is often considered as the leader of Barkeley Mafia, a term given to a group of US educated Indonesian economists whose efforts brought Indonesia back from dire economic conditions on the beginning of Suharto regime.
