Eight die when a ferry capsized in Sunda Strait

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SERANG - A ferry KM Bahuga Jaya capsized on Wednesday morning at local time in Sunda Strait, about four miles from Bakauheni Port. The ferry sank after hitting tanker Norgas Canthika. Eight people were reportedly death.

Operational Manager of ASDP Indonesia Ferry in Bakauheni, Heru Purwanto, said about 207 passengers on board while it was sinking. The ferry was sailing from Merak Port in Banten to Bakauheni in Lampung. The boat also carried 22 cars, 11 pickups, 17 medium trucks, 18 big trucks, and some motorcycles.

The six deaths have been evacuated to Kalianda Local Hospital, but only one has been identified. The name of the identified victim is Maryono. The other two victims were evacuated to a hospital in Cilegon, Banten.

The team consisted of Search and Rescue Team, Ministry of Health, was reported still evacuating and locating the survivors when this article published.
