REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Ahmad Fathanah, a close friend of former Chairman of Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) Luthfi Hasan Ishaaq, has been sentenced to 17 years and six months in prison. Prosecutor has judged that Fathanah has been guilty in corrupt practices and money laundering in handling applications of beef import quota in Ministry of Agriculture.
"We ask the judges to decide that defendant was legally involved in corruption case," a prosecutor, Rini Triningsih said at Corruption Court in Jakarta on Monday.
In the corruption case, Fathanah has been sentenced to seven years and six months in prison and also a fine of 500 million IDR with subsidiary imprisonment for six months. On money laundering case, he has been sentenced 10 years in prison and a fine of one billion IDR with subsidiary imprisonment for one year and six months.
Prosecutors argued that Fathanah and Ishaaq had caused a loss of economic rights of Indonesian people. Their activities are not in line with state efforts to combat corruption. Ishaaq is accused of using his influence as Chairman of PKS to persuade Minister of Agriculture (Suswono) to help PT Indoguna Utama to get bigger slice of the nation’s beef import quota.
Fathanah received 1.3 billion out of 40 billion IDR from the company to be given to Ishaaq. Prosecutor proven that Fathanah facilitated a meeting between President Director of PT Indoguna Utama, Mary Elizabeth Liman, with Ishaaq.
