REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Vice presidential candidate, Jusuf Kalla targeted to develop 20,000 megawatt (MW) of electricity in Indonesia. He said that Indonesia had been too late more than six years ago.

"We no longer need 10,000 MW of electricity - the second stage of electricity fast track program - , but 20,000 MW," Kalla told to reporter after delivering a speech to local businessmen in Jakarta recently.

When he became vice president in period of 2004-2009, the electricity fast track program had been running with a capacity of 10,000 MW, but it did not reach the target after he stepped down the vice president's chair.

The first stage of electricity fast track program was started by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Kalla in 2006. This project was undertaken by the state owned electricity company, PT PLN in cooperation with foreign investors, such as Dongfang Electric Corp from China.

Government went out for the second stage by using renewable energy with the same capacity, which still run until now. Indonesian government targets to reach 90 percent of national electricity coverage by 2020. Only 80 percent of Indonesian people enjoy the electricity. Kalla promised to ease the electricity investment licensing to investors.

"I am optimistic that Joko Widodo will meet the energy shortage if he becomes the president," Kalla said.
