REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The research conducted by Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB) recently has shown that self sufficiency in meat will occur in 2024.
"Especially with regard to commodities meat, the results of our study show that self sufficiency will occur in 2024," Strategic Studies and Agricultural Policy (KSKP) director Dodik Ridho Nurrochmat, stated here on Saturday.
Its success could only be judged after assuming that all programs planned by the agriculture ministry were going well, Dodik said.
If all the obstacles are not removed or at least reduced, the self sufficiency of meat targets nationally will not be accomplished, he remarked.
"Just imagine, except corn, which has bright prospects, the self sufficiency of the five commodities is under threat," he asserted.
Keeping that in mind, the government and society should be realistic to the situation and not necessarily close down the channels to import commodity meat, he believed.
He added that imports should be reduced gradually by adjusting the domestic supply conditions to the level of demand.
"Do not apply anti-import nationalism blindly, even as our meat needs continue to rise and the supply does not show any significant increase," he said.
The Indonesian problem is not related to insufficient domestic meat supply, but to the domestic demand that continues to rise, he affirmed.
"So our problem is inadequate domestic supply, poor infrastructure, and high transaction costs," he said.
