REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo held a closed meeting with several ministers to discuss current economic condition at his office on Thursday. During the meeting, Jokowi asked finance minister to boost the tax revenue.

"We have discussed several issues related to taxation. We still has large potential on tax revenue," Jokowi said on Thursday (30/10).

Despite stable economic growth, Indonesia's tax revenues have never been optimal. According to Jokowi, there are only 17 million out of 24 million taxpayers in Indonesia.

During the last 10 years, tax revenue in the country only increased 0.1 percent because many people did not fulfill its obligation. Tax coverage ratio only reached 53 percent, while the income tax was only 50 percent.

"However, I am optimistic that it can be improved," Jokowi added.

Tax collection must be intensified so as to achieve a breakthrough in meeting revenue targets. The closed meeting was attended by all economic ministers, namely Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs (Sofyan Djalil), Minister of Finance (Bambang Brodjonegoro), Minister of State Owned Enterprises (Rini Soemarno), Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatila Planning (Ferry Mursyidan Baldan), Minister of Environment and Forestry (Siti Nurbaya), Minister of Labor (Hanif Dhakiri), Minister of Trade (Rahmat Gobel), Minister of Public Works and Housing (Basuki Hadi Purnomo), Minister of Industry (Saleh Husin), Minister of Cooperative and Small Medium Enterprises (Puspayoga) and Head of Bappenas (Andrinof Chaniago).
