REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The National Police Command has sent a team to investigate a violent incident in Paniai, Papua, on Monday, which left four people dead and wounded several others.

"We have sent a team to investigate if the gunfire was started by police officers or other parties. The team comprises members from the investigation division (Propam) and general inspectorate division (Irwasum)," National Deputy Police Chief Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti said here on Tuesday (9/12).

He noted that the team has been assigned the task to investigate who initiated the firing in the incident.

He confirmed that four civilians had been killed in the incident, and the Paniai Timur sector police station had been damaged, while several police officers had also suffered injuries.

Currently, the situation in the region has normalized, and the security personnel are still on guard there, he affirmed.

Papua Regional Police Command Chief Inspector General Yotje Mende revealed that the violence broke out following an argument between the security personnel and community members on the road, which led to a violent clash in Enarotali, the capital of Paniai.

After the clash, sounds of gunfire were heard from the adjoining mountainous area, and hundreds of community members attacked sub-district military and police stations, which are located side-by-side, he stated.

Based on the reports he had received, four people had been killed while 15 other wounded, including four police and military members and four cars were also vandalized.
