REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said the country is still facing a host of problems that have to be sorted out by all parties.
"There are still many challenges we fare facing related to individualism, consumerism and hedonism," Jokowi said at the Sixth Congress of Indonesian Muslims here on Wednesday.
He said the government also is concerned with poverty and illiteracy as well as empowerment of people's economy.
"Every time I went to the lowest level of district areas I always hear complaints about unemployment and poverty. This could be coped with if we have high economic growth. However we must not be trapped by high growth. What is more important is equitable distribution of prosperity," he said.
The president said urgent problems that need immediate handling are rampant drug abuse and corruption.
He also pointed to protracted rift between police and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
The KPK police conflict is perhaps the greatest dilemma being faced by the president, as he has to install a new police chief.
The sole candidate he picked for the job Comr. Gen Budi Gunawan was charged by KPK with corruption.
The decision of KPK led to the conflict between the two law enforcement agencies.
The conflict has to be ended although it is not so simple, Jokowi said.
The Parliament that approved Budi Gunawan candidacy has urged the president to go ahead installing the three star police general amid strong opposition from the people led by anti corruption groups.
