REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PANGKALPINANG -- The Regional Representative Council's (DPD's) Speaker Irman Gusman has called for the acceleration of the development of a nuclear power plant (PLTN) in the Bangka-Belitung (Babel) province.

"The Babel province is a suitable and safe place for setting up a nuclear power plant and therefore it is necessary for us to speed up its development in order to meet the local people's energy demand," Irman said at the Babel governor's office here on Saturday, March 7.

According to him, nuclear energy is a green energy technology, and therefore, numerous developed countries, such as Japan, South Korea, and Britain prefer the nuclear energy alternative. "Until now, Indonesia has not initiated the development of nuclear energy to meet electricity demand of the public," the DPD Speaker noted.

Therefore, he encouraged the Babel provincial government and the local community to ensure the success of the nuclear power plant's development. "Setting up a nuclear power plant is a very appropriate choice for overcoming the energy deficit faced by Babel," he said, adding that nuclear energy is environmentally friendly and suitable for development in the province.
