REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- British Ambassador to Indonesia, ASEAN, and Timor Leste Moazzam Malik here on Monday officially inaugurated a British study center in Surabaya, East Java.
"The study center is a commitment to establish cooperation between the United Kingdom and Indonesia," Malik affirmed.
The study center aims to teach Surabaya children in the 6-18 age group to fluently speak English.
In addition, the study center will be a source of information for the education system, cultures, and other aspects related to the two countries.
"Generally, the cooperation is expected to improve the student exchange program between Indonesia and the United Kingdom," Malik said.
With regard to the study center, Head of British Council Sir Vernon Ellis stated that the study center is a manifestation of the close partnership between the two countries in various sectors, especially in the fields of research and higher education, arts, creative economy, community development, and English practice.
"Honestly, I am impressed by what Indonesians have achieved with regard to cooperation. However, there are many things that can be developed in the future," Ellis noted.
He remarked that the British Council will facilitate Indonesian students to learn at the study center.
The British study center in Surabaya is the second to be established after the first one in Medan, North Sumatra.
In Jakarta, the study center will be officially opened on April 28, 2015.
In 2014, the British Council managed to reach out to 16 million Indonesians through various programs, both directly and via digital technology.
In the near future, the number of Indonesians connected to the British Council is expected to reach twenty million.
