REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SUKABUMI -- The Sukabumi Police, religious leaders and the military successfully stopped ten citizens of Sukabumi from leaving for Syria to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) on Thursday (7/5).
"They planned to leave this year, but we successfully thwarted their attempt. Apparently, they do not understand what the ISIS is about, but we educated them," Chief of the Sukabumi Police AKBP Diki Budiman said here on Thursday.
These citizens then sat for an exam and were educated about the radical ideology of the ISIS.
Later, it was found that the citizens who were set to go to Syria were incited by the terrorist network's blandishments of a huge salary, marriage and the status of a martyr.
These ten citizens were tempted to depart for Syria due to their lack of knowledge on religion and economic conditions.
In addition, people who feel hopeless and believe that they are not recognized by the government are drawn to the terrorist network that offers a great sum as a reward.
"We implement anticipatory measures consistently as the network is mobile. Their campaigners do not carry any flags or symbols, which makes it harder to detect them," Budiman pointed out.
Moreover, two citizens of Sukabumi were reported to have been killed in Syria, according to a report from their families. However, the cause of their death is still uncertain.
"We have not yet received authentic data on the cause of their death and do not know whether they died in battle, were sentenced to death, captured by Syrian soldiers, or died in an accident. We are still gathering evidence related to the news provided by the families in Kebonpedes district," Budiman affirmed.
