REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia's economic growth must be based on productivity and strong industries, according to President Joko Widodo.
"Our economic growth must not be consumer-based because added values are found in the development of production and domestic industries," he said at a limited cabinet meeting here on Tuesday.
He expressed hope that with such economic fundamentals, Indonesia's economy would not only strengthen but would improve in quality.
"I see a lot of projects that can be carried out using domestic products. However, in reality, many of them still use imported products, due to which domestic industries that can have production capacity of 90 to 100 percent are stuck at 40 to 60 percent," the president, who is a former furniture businessman, explained.
He added that the situation should become the common focus of ministries, state institutions and state-owned companies and must be immediately changed through forced use of local products.
To achieve this goal, the head of state noted that systematic adjustments must be made and a regulation must be implemented.
The meeting, which was held to discuss efforts to promote the use of domestic components, was attended by Trade Minister Rachmat Gobel, Finance Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro, Chief Economic Minister Sofyan Djalil, State Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Sudirman Said, Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman, and Minister of National Development Planning Andrinof Chaniago.
