REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- If the need arises, a state-owned enterprise can be formed to harness the abundant sources of renewable geothermal energy, stated President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

"Research conducted by energy experts shows that the potential of geothermal energy can reach 25 thousand megawatts (MW), and therefore, this potential must be utilized maximally," the president noted while inaugurating Indonesia New and Renewable Energy and Conservation (EBTKE-Conex 2015) here on Wednesday.

Jokowi remarked that the government is currently giving special attention to new and renewable sources of energy, especially geothermal, as it exists in abundance from Sabang to Merauke.

"Indonesia possesses huge potential for new and renewable energy, and we believe it can help the country achieve self-sufficiency in the field of energy," the president pointed out.

He further added that the target to develop power plants, with a total capacity of 35 thousand MW, in Indonesia can be realized if all government and public elements can utilize this new and renewable energy potential.
