REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Issue of climate change and handling of peat became topics that would be discussed at a meeting between President Joko Widodo and President of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday (3/11).
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno LP Marsoedi, said the two countries agreed to undertake discussions to assess potential for making tropical peat in Indonesia as sources of energy.
She explained, the two countries actually had a cooperation agreement on the issue of climate change and forestry. The cooperation agreements included the peat lands management issues.
Just like Indonesia, said Retno, Finland also has peat lands. Nearly a third of territory of Finland was peat lands. The difference was, Findland managed to keep the peat lands and turn it into energy sources.
"The contribution of energy derived from peat lands in Finland reached 5-7 percent. So this will be explored by our energy minister," said Retno.
In a meeting between Indonesia and Finland, which would be held at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday (3/11) afternoon, there would be also signed cooperation in the development of renewable energy by minister from both countries. The signing of the cooperation was witnessed by President Jokowi and President Niinisto.
