REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has stressed the need for Indonesia to have more synergy with the UN to ensure sustainable development and achieve the target of sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The minister made the remarks during the opening of the second plenary meeting of the Indonesia-UN Consultation Forum (IUNCF) on Friday, the Foreign Ministry said in a press statement released on Saturday.
Retno said the meeting was part of the ministry's efforts to harmonize the UN's activities in Indonesia with the development agenda of the government.
The activity is also aimed to ensure more effective, transparent and goal-oriented cooperation by involving relevant stakeholders, she said.
"Given this forum, cooperation between the Indonesian government and the UN in Indonesia will hopefully become more coherent and effective," he said.
Director General of Multilateral Affairs at the Foreign Ministry Hasan Kleib and UN Residence Coordinator for Indonesia Douglas Broderick co-chaired the forum attended by representatives of the UN bodies in Indonesia and ministries/government institutions that have established cooperation with the UN bodies.
As many as 20 UN bodies are operating in Indonesia, each having programs in various parts of the country.
The presence of IUNCF will hopefully be able to improve coordination, not only between the Indonesian government and the UN bodies in Indonesia but also among the UN bodies.
It is expected that good coordination will be able to prevent any duplication of programs and make them more needs-oriented.
At the event, Broderick noted that Indonesia has shown its global leadership in the matter of SDGs and UN peacekeeping regional mechanism to mitigate disasters and settle conflicts.
The IUNCF meeting is part of the efforts to enhance national cooperation and make Indonesian leadership more effective at a global level, he said.
