REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) left the Halim Perdanakusuma airport here at 9 a.m. local time on Wednesday for Bandung, West Java, to commence his working visit to several regions.
Earlier, Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil had stated that President Jokowi was scheduled to lead a ceremony to commemorate the birth of Pancasila in Bandung on Wednesday.
Every year, on June 1, Indonesia commemorates the birth of the national ideology of Pancasila.
Looking back 71 years on June 1, 1945, during the assembly of the Investigating Committee for the Preparation of Indonesian Independence, Sukarno, one of Indonesia's founding fathers, had presented the idea to serve as the basis of the newborn republic.
"I call this, with the help of a linguist, Pancasila. Sila means basic principles, and on these five basis, we set up the Indonesian state, which is eternal and immortal," Sukarno noted in his speech.
Since then, Pancasila has become the official philosophical foundation of the Indonesian state promulgated by the country's first President Sukarno.
The word "pancasila" is translated from Old Javanese as "five principles." Sukarno formulated these principles to unite the diverse archipelago populated by hundreds of ethnic groups.
The five original principles presented by Sukarno to the Investigating Committee for Preparatory Work for Indonesian Independence were: Indonesian nationality, internationalism, deliberative consensus, social welfare, and belief in the one and only God.
President Jokowi will deliver the keynote address as the culmination of the commemoration of Bung Karno's speech at Gedung Merdeka in Bandung.
During the visit, President Jokowi is accompanied by First Lady Iriana, Coordinating Minister for Human Resources Development and Culture Puan Maharani, Minister/State Secretary Pratikno, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Presidential Special Staff Teten Masduki, and Presidential Communication Team member Sukardi Rinakit, among others.
Apart from Bandung, the president is also scheduled to visit Central Java, Bangka-Belitung, Aceh, West Kalimantan, and Gorontalo.
