REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The public transportation subsidy being offered in several areas to serve the communities free of charge should be emulated by other regions, Indonesian Transportation Society observer Djoko Setidjawarno remarked here on Tuesday.

In a written statement to Antara here, Djoko said he lauded the policy of public transport subsidy, granted by the city of Pare-Pare in South Sulawesi Province and Tabanan District in Bali Province.

"There are around 10 free-of-charge fleets that serve three major routes in the city of Pare-Pare, and this free public transport service has been operational for the past three years," Setidjawarno stated.

In Tabanan District, Bali, a free public transport service, called "Trans Serasi Tabanan," has been offered since 2014.

"Until the end of 2016, as many as 80 city transport cars, four small buses, and three medium buses had been provided to offer free transportation services to the public, especially school students," he noted.

The Indonesian Transportation Society observer reiterated that the subsidized public transport services in Pare-Pare and Tabanan should be replicated by other areas in Indonesia to attract people to switch from using private cars to means of public transportation.
