REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANJARNEGARA -- A total of 575 earthquakes hit the Indonesian province of Central Java last year, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

However, only 16 of the 575 earthquakes measured above 5 on the Richter scale, chief of BMKG Office in Banjarnegara district, Setyoajie Prayoedhie, said here on Thursday.

"Only 30 of the earthquakes could be felt by people," he said.

The BMKG also recorded 24 extreme weathers as reflected by rainfalls of more than 50 millimeters per day and strong winds at a speed of above 45 kilometers per hour.

"The maximum rainfall of 124 millimeters occurred on October 8, 2017, while wind with a speed of 45 kilometer per hour happened on May 26, 2017," he said.

The BMKG also recorded a total of 330,328 lightening in Central Java last year.

"The highest number of lightening was recorded at 57,592 in March 2017 and the lowest number of lightening was recorded at 142 in August 2017," he said.

The total rainfalls throughout last year reached 4,923 millimeters, he said.

Average wind speed in 2017 was 10.2 kilometers per hour, with the highest average wind speed of 11.7 kilometers per hour was recorded in Match 2017 and the lowest wind speed of 8.4 kilometers per hour was recorded in July 2017.

The BMKG also asked the public to remain vigilant as the peak of the rainy season will be January 2018.

"As Central Java has entered the rainy season and the rainy season is predicted to peak in January, the BMKG calls on the public to remain vigilant," he added.
