REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission XI is scheduled to conduct a fit and proper test on the candidate for Bank Indonesia (BI) governor in the fourth session. The Commission XI's internal meeting will be held this week.
"After the House Speaker read out a letter proposing candidates for BI governor's post for the 2018-2023 term during a plenary session of the DPR, the Commission XI will undergo a fit and proper test," House Commission XI member Hendrawan Supratikno said here on Monday.
He said DPR received letter proposing candidate for BI governor's post for the 2018-2023 term to undergo a fit and proper test. President Joko Widodo has reportedly written a letter to the DPR, proposing a sole candidate.
On Monday (March 5), the DPR officially processed a letter from President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) nominating Perry Warjiyo as a sole candidate for BI governor for the 2018-2023 term. House Speaker Bambang Soesatyo explained that the nomination of Warjiyo will be discussed at a meeting of the DPR's Consultative Body on Tuesday (March 6).
The House Speaker is expected to read out the letter during a plenary session of the DPR. The DPR's Consultative Body will later hold a discussion regarding the letter and assign the House Commission XI to conduct a fit and proper test on the candidates.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the House Commission XI, Melchias Markus Mekeng explained DPR is to seek a second opinion from bankers and academics on the nomination of Warjiyo as the sole candidate for BI governorship before conducting a fit and proper test on him. The nomination of the sole candidate for BI governorship is likely to come under the spotlight at the parliament, he said.
Whether or not the nomination will be accepted will depend on political dynamics in the House Commission XI, he stated. "Political ripple is normal," he added.
Agus Martowardojo is expected to end his term in office as BI governor on May 15, 2018.
