REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Former Chairman of the Constitutional Court Mahfud MD said he has no ambition to become president. However, it did not mean it was sign of a rejection.
"To such question I would always give the same answer that I don't want to be president, but it does not means I would not be ready," he said in a general lecture at the Para Syndicate, here on Thursday.
When pressed with question, he said, "How could I say that I am ready when I have received no offer." One would need support from political parties to contest presidential elections to become president or vice president, he added.
In presidential election 2014, Mahfud confirmed his could not hide his wish to run as presidential candidate. On November 15, 2013 evening, in a meeting with Madurese's younger generation, he said he would no longer hide his intention to run for president.
"I will not again hide that I will be one of the presidential candidates in the election in 2014. I will not hide it again. Among common Madurese we have to be frank," he said in a lecture on legal affairs before 100 members of the Association of Madurese Younger Generation (Hegemura) of Malang district.
Earlier, Central Executive Board (DPP) of Gerindra Party said they have prepared 15 names to be its vice presidential candidate. Mahfud's name was in the nomination list along with former Indonesian Military Commander (TNI) Gatot Nurmayanto and Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) chairman Sohibul Iman.
However, Gerindra party officials have not made up their mind yet. Andre said his party was still discussing the best vice presidential candidate.
