REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki will visit Indonesia mid October to attend the Palestine solidarity week. Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister AM Fachir stated that the visit of Minister al-Maliki would reaffirm Indonesia's support toward acknowledging Palestine as an independent nation.

"It also brings a momentum to intensify our synergy because not only the government, but the public in general also need to display their support toward Palestine," said the Deputy Minister in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Aside from formal meetings between government officials from both countries, the Palestine solidarity week will also be filled with discussions and actions during the Car Free Day to raise more awareness among the public with regard to the issues involving Palestine.

The urge for the international community to immediately recognize Palestinian independence will also be voiced by Indonesia at the UN General Assembly on September 27, when President Mahmoud Abbas expressed the aspirations of the Palestinian people.

Indonesia is committed to standing alongside Palestine to achieve the realization of an independent Palestinian state with Two-State Solutions, as stated by Regional Director for the Middle East from the Foreign Ministry, Sunarko, at an event themed "Solidarity and Support for President Mahmoud Abbas" held at the Palestinian Embassy in Jakarta on Monday (Sept 24).

"We will continue to voice our commitment to forums, communities and international organizations to offer full membership to Palestine in international organizations," Sunarko said.

Additionally, he said that when Indonesia officially served as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period 2019-2020, the Indonesian government would continue to strengthen support for Palestine to achieve independence.

In response, Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia Zuhair Alshun expressed his appreciation to the Indonesian government and people for the full support given to Palestine.

"We will continue to give full attention and express our gratitude to the Indonesian government for all forms of support given to Palestine," Ambassador Alshun said.
