REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Ikhlas is a charity of worship done by the heart. The value of the worship performed by the body depends largely on the value of the iklas that exists in the heart of a believer. With regard to the Ikhlas, Sheikh Nawawi Al-Bantani explained this term clearly in his book, Nurudh Dholam
Sheikh Nawawi Al-Bantani said that the first level is obedience to Allah. Thank God for taking first and foremost place.
The Ikhlas in this group is a believer when worshiping God and doing righteous deeds, expecting nothing at all but the grace of Allah. A believer does not also expect the reward of heaven or to avoid the torment of hell. According to Sheikh Nawawi, this kind of loyalty is at the highest level.
Second level, praise for the afterlife. The second level of righteousness is to worship and do righteous deeds in expectation of reward, to obtain heaven, and to fear the torment of hell. According to Sheikh Nawawi, this level of Ikhlas is at an intermediate level.
Third, be sincere because of the world. The final level of sincerity is to worship because it hopes for a reward in the world, for example someone performs the prayer of reading Surah Al-Waqi'ah in the hope of getting wealth, giving out alms hoping to get double the fortune, and so on. According to Sheikh Nawawi, sincerity like that is sincerity at the lowest level.
