REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- On National Book Day, which is celebrated every May 17, the National Library reveals that copyright infringement is a classic issue in the world of crime. The public is also called upon to fight piracy and copyright infringement by purchasing or accessing legal books.

“Perpusnas encourages people to buy, use, and access books that are legal, because if people access books are not legal, the consequences of piracy will harm the creativity of the authors of the books,” said Acting Head of the National Library (Perpusnas) E Aminudin Azis during a meeting at Perpusnas Building, Jakarta, Friday (17/5/2024).

According to Aminudin, in addition to harming authors, buying pirated books can also be detrimental to publishers and society as readers. For what is really being attacked is the thinking of society.

“That is, they think, yes, never mind, we are taking advantage even if it is not legal. This is a negative thought,” he said.

To that end, Aminudin appealed to the public to access books whose copyright is clear. Avoid the act of pirating books.

Meanwhile, the author who is also the initiator of the Community Reading Park, Maman Suherman, also highlighted the importance of protecting writers from the threat of piracy. He said that appreciation for the profession of writers in Indonesia is also still low.

“Indeed, the appreciation for the author is still low, at one point even lower if we see that the author's work is not protected and not well controlled, so my book, for example, which (costs) Rp 90,000, people can buy in online stores for Rp 3,000-Rp 4,000, it's pirated books,” he said.
