REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk or SIG integrates sustainability aspects in the company's mining activities, including environmental aspects, public welfare, and occupational safety and health (K3). The move was done to minimize the negative impact and create broad benefits for all stakeholders.

SIG Operations Director Reni Wulandari said that by running sustainable mining, the company was taking on greater responsibility in a broader context. “The significant increase this year is a manifestation of the spirit of continuous improvement that we carry out to ensure that mining activities are carried out safely and environmentally friendly, as well as to promote communication and establish constructive relations with the surrounding community to improve well-being,” Reni said in a statement in Jakarta, Thursday (3/10/2024).

In mining activities at SIG Pabrik Tuban for example, SIG implements the zero run off method to maintain the underground water balance in the mine area. Whereas in post-mining land management, SIG implements reclamation innovations using a groove system. This technique is performed by making elongated furrow-shaped holes, such as trenches with certain dimensions as a planting medium, making them more effective and efficient and environmentally friendly.

Until 2024, SIG has conducted revegetation on greenbelt and post-mining land in Tuban, East Java, with the planting of 526,563 trees on a total land area of 251.80 hectares.

Reni added that SIG also created a breakthrough in post-mining land management by building the Kambangsemi Ecopark area for community empowerment. Empowerment programs include cavendish banana plantations, eucalyptus plantations and distilleries, green house areas, breeding areas (catfish, laying hens and goats), tilapia fish floats, Kriya Bale (workshop paving stones, pots, interlock bricks), to camping ground.

In an effort to achieve Zero Accidents (Zero Accidents), Zero Occupational Illnesses (PAK), and Zero Incidents Due to Workforce Illness (KAPTK), SIG implemented the Mining Safety Management System (SMKP), and created a driving monitoring system (DMS) by installing fatigue sensors and in-cabin cameras throughout the mine fleet. DMS is a mine operator monitoring system to prevent accidents due to fatigue and unsafe action.

In addition, SIG also carries out prevention of Occupational Diseases (PTK), carries out health risk assessment and management of the work environment to map work areas of high health risk to prevent the presence of PAK and KAPTK.

Thanks to this initiative, throughout 2022—until August 2024, SIG managed to record zero accident, zero frequency accident rate, zero severity accident rate and leading indicator safety performance with 100 percent results, and registered Nihil PAK and Nihil KAPTK in mine operations at Tuban Plant and Rembang Plant.

“SIG is committed to continuing to run sustainable mining through the application of good mining engineering rules, to create added value for all stakeholders,” Reni said.

For conducting sustainable mining by implementing Good Mining Practice rules, SIG recently won 16 awards from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) at the Good Mining Practice Award 2024.

The 16 awards received by SIG and its subsidiaries was a fourfold increase from the previous year where SIG and its subsidiaries received four Good Mining Practice 2023 awards. The 16 awards that SIG won include eight awards for SIG Paberi Tuban and Pabrik Rembang, one award for PT Semen Padang, two awards for PT Semen Baturaja Tbk, as well as five awards for PT Solusi Bangun Indonesia Tbk (SBI) factories in Narogong, Tuban, and Lhoknga.
