Indonesia's Export Value Reached USD 20.76 Billion

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Central Statistical Agency (BPS) noted the value of Indonesia's exports in September 2023 reached USD 20.76 billion, down 5.63 percent compared to August 2023. Chief Executive Officer of BPS Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti explained that the value of exports in September 2023 on an annual basis (year-on-year) decreased by 16.17 percent.

“This contraction was driven by the decline in non-oil and gas exports and continues the trend that has occurred since the beginning of the year mainly due to the relatively lower prices of the leading commodities in the global market compared to last year,” Amalia said in a press conference of the Statistical News Release in Central Jakarta on Monday (16/10/2023).

Oil and gas exports in September 2023 were recorded at USD 1.41 billion or up 6.54 percent compared to the previous month's value of USD 1.31 billion. Non-oil and gas exports fell 6.41 percent from USD 20.6 billion to 19.35 billion.

Amalia explained that the decrease in the value of exports in September 2023 was driven by a decrease in non-oil and gas exports, mainly in the categories of vegetable fats and oils (20.54 percent), silver metal seeds and ash (23.8 percent), clothing and accessories (48.45 percent), and mineral fuels (5.25 percent). Oil and gas exports, which increased, were driven by an increase in the value of crude oil exports by 185.14 percent compared to the previous month.

The largest increase in non-oil and gas exports of September 2023 versus August 2023 occurred in iron and steel at USD 78.6 million (3.51 percent), while the largest decrease occurred in fats and animal/vegetable oil commodities at USD 601.1 million (20.54 percent).

Cumulatively, explained Amalia, the value of Indonesia's exports in the period January-September 2023 reached USD 192.27 billion or decreased by 12.34 percent compared to the same period in the previous year.

“Non-oil and gas exports reached USD 180.48 or decreased by 12.89 percent while oil and gas exports reached USD 11.79 billion or decreased by 2.98 percent,” Amalia said.

Amalia said the largest non-oil and gas exports in September 2023 were to China at USD 5.17 billion, followed by the United States at USD 1.84 billion, and India at USD 1.50 billio, with the third contributing 43.97 percent. While exports to ASEAN and the European Union (27 countries) amounted to USD 3.49 billion and 1.33 billion, respectively.

According to the province of origin of goods, Indonesia's largest exports in January—September 2023 came from West Java with a value of USD 27.64 billion (14.37 percent), followed by East Borneo USD 21.16 billion (11.01 percent), and East Java USD 16.21 billion (8.43 percent).
