REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Ruqyah is an activity in Sharia to fortify and remove the evil elements in people.
In principle, ruqyah is allowed under sharia, except for those that contain some things. There are three things: it contains a shirk, the phrase is not understood, and comes from a Muslim who is not clear in his knowledge, is pious and undisciplined.
Ruqyah is also forbidden if it comes from a soothsayer, an infidel and such. In a hadith, it is told about the types of shirk. Here is the hadith:
عن عبد الله بن مسعود رضي الله عنه قال: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: "إن الرقى والتمائم والتِّوَلَة شرك". [صحيح] - [رواه أبو داود وابن ماجه وأحمد]
It is narrated from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud who said that he heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying, “Indeed, the ruqyah, the talisman, and at that is the shirk.” (H.R. Abu Daud, Ibn Majah, and Ahmad)
Meanwhile, at-tiwalah is magic in which people will believe that the woman is cherished by her husband, when in fact she is not.
This magic called at-tiwalah is performed after asking jinn and demons for help. This is to change what Allah has destined for him.
The scholar Al-Khaththabi explains that the forbidden ruqyah is a ruqyah that is not known what its meaning is, so magic or disbelief can enter into it.
However, if the meaning can be understood, and there is a religion in it, then it is permissible. In a hadith narrated from Aud ibn Malik RA, he said:
كنا نرقي في الجاهلية، فقلنا: يا رسول الله كيف ترى في ذلك؟ فقال: اعرضوا عليّ رقاكم، لا بأس بالرقى ما لم يكن فيها شرك
“We used to do ruqyah in pre-Islamic times.” Then we asked the Prophet, “What do you think about ruqyah?” He said, “It is okay as long as there is no sadness in it.” (MR. Muslim)
