REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Bureau of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) urges people to remain alert to the potential for heavy rain that can be accompanied by lightning, strong winds, and possible flooding. The BMKG detected an increase in atmospheric activity that could potentially result in heavy rain flooding most areas of western Java in the next week, including Jakarta Province.
BMKG Deputy Meteorological Officer Guswanto in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday, said that with this increased atmospheric activity, “The period from 4 to 11 March 2025, high intensity rain is still potentially possible. Periodic weather monitoring is essential to anticipate the impact of ever-evolving atmospheric dynamics.”
Guswatnto explained that atmospheric waves such as Rossby Equatorial, Low Frequency, and Kelvin are predicted to remain active in most areas of Sumatra, western Java, Borneo, Sulawesi, North Maluku, and the Papuan Islands. Such conditions have an impact on increased growth of rain clouds of varying intensity in each region.
In fact, according to him, the atmospheric conditions are further strengthened by the cyclonic circulation that is currently detected already forming in the Indian Ocean in the western part of Aceh and in the south of Papua, as the results of the latest analysis by the BMKG meteorological team.
As for the existence of cyclonic circulation, this causes a slowdown in wind speed or convergence in water areas, including the Natuna Sea, the Banda Sea, the waters south of Sulawesi, the Arafuru Sea, and the Moluccas. BMKG also detected quite significant convective cloud development from local lability analysis, in western Java and various other areas including Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Riau Islands, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung, Bengkulu, Lampung, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, East Nusa Tenggara, as well as almost the entire region of Borneo, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua.
“Atmospheric lability plays a role in supporting the process of rain cloud formation, especially during the afternoon to late afternoon or evening,” he said.
