REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MANAMA -- Bahrain's largest opposition group on Tuesday announced that its leaders and members will take part in a one-day hunger strike on Wednesday to back prisoners at the country's largest prison.

Al Wefaq National Islamic Society said in a statement that about 400 inmates are on a hunger strike since the beginning of this week against alleged human rights violations and mistreatment. The society said it's taking the step in solidarity with those prisoners in Bahrain's largest prison facility in Jaw.

Earlier on Monday Bahrain's public security authority said that they cannot comment on claims made by Al Wefaq regarding the hunger strike of the inmates. It added that the government had provided the inmates with food, medicine and enough care-taking, and now it's up to the public prosecution to investigate the matter.

Al Wefaq said last month that it documented over 680 sporadic protests and 187 arrests, including 17 children and three women. Some families told the group that their sons or relatives were subjected to forms of degrading treatment during arrests.

In response Bahrain's top security chief denied any claims of torture of arrestees made by some human rights groups, saying it were banned by the constitution. The country's Interior Ministry is currently investigating some credible allegations of torture and will take actions if maltreatment is proven.
