REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesia, during a meeting with 32 UN member countries in New York last Thursday (Sept 25), said it supports establishing a code of conduct for the use of vetoes by UN Security Council members.

The Friday meeting sought to discuss whether to develop a code of conduct for members of the UN Security Council related to its privilege of having veto right. The meeting discussed the need to prevent the use of vetoes by UN Security Council members when other UN members are discussing mass violence, genocide, war crimes or crime against humanity, according to a press release from Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released on Saturday.

"Indonesia has consistently stated its refusal to use vetoes by members of the UN Security Council. We have not yet changed our position," said Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marty Natalegawa, concurrently leader of Indonesia's delegation during the UN meeting.

According to Marty, vetoes by members of the UN Security Council are "anachronistic, hence the right needs to be revoked".

Aware of the challenge to revoke vetoes from members of UN Security Council, Natalegawa said Indonesia chooses to support France's initiative of establishing a code of conduct for the use of vetoes. This step was considered to be a good start in strengthening the credibility and effectiveness of the UN Security Council.

Other representative from 32 countries participating in the New York meeting also agreed on the code of conduct, which is expected to be the key to improving the credibility and transparency of the UN Security Council. Meanwhile France, as the initiator of the code of conduct idea, said it would continuously promote the initiative among members of UN Security Council.
