REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Most of the Indonesians who have lost their jobs in Greece have begun leaving the country following an economic crisis that has pushed the nation to the verge of bankruptcy, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry stated.

"As a result of the crisis, most of the Indonesians who were employed in the informal sector have lost their jobs. Several of them have returned to Indonesia," spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Arrmanatha Nasir noted on Thursday.

According to data from the ministry, a total of 1,046 Indonesians lived and worked in Greece. Some of them have left the financially strapped country.

"As many as 1,046 Indonesians lived there, and some of them have returned home. We do not know whether they returned home themselves or with the help of the Indonesian embassy in Greece. We must check it again," he remarked.

With the Greek economy worsening, several Indonesians have lost their jobs and had to return to Indonesia, he pointed out.

After all, he believed that the Greek crisis would not have a significant impact on the Indonesian economy.

"Admittedly, Indonesia will be under external pressure. But, we are optimistic that Indonesia has good economic fundamentals to withstand the crisis," he affirmed.

Earlier, the foreign ministry's spokesman also remarked that the Greek crisis would more or less affect Indonesia's exports to Greece.

"The value of Greece-Indonesia trade currently stands at US$200 million. It is not quite large, but it is very significant," he said.

Nasir added that Indonesia has sound bilateral relations with Greece, including trade relations.
