Jakarta Police Chief confirms November 4th rally after friday prayers

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Jakarta Police Chief Insp. Gen. Mochamad Iriawan has confirmed the police will guard a massive rally in Jakarta that will be followed by Islamic organizations on Friday (11/4). Muslims demanded Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama case of alleged religious blasphemy to be processed in accordance with the law.

This will be the second rally following the "Aksi Bela Alquran (Action to defend the Quran)" on October, 28. Iriawan has revealed the mass rally will start to march from the Istiqlal Mosque, Central Jakarta to the State Palace. "It will be held after Friday prayers," said Iriawan in the Gambir, Central Jakarta, Thursday.

The protester will start to march from the Istiqlal Mosque through the Borobudur Hotel on Jl Pejambon. Next, they will take a turn into the Immanuel Church in front of Gambir- in front of National Police's Criminal Investigation Department and turn right towards the Embassy of US-Jakarta City Hall office-Roundabout of Horse Statue-in Medan Merdeka Barat and end at the State Palace.

Iriawan ensured the rally would took place peacefully. It was also confirmed by the statement Habib Rizieq Shihab. Iriawan met him as an expert witness at the National Police's Criminal Investigation Department. "I asked again about the route, he (Habib Rizieq) expressed in accordance with the commitment, the protest will be done peacefuly, orderly, and safe," Iriawan said.

He also asked for the commitment of the protesters in order to the rally ended with riot. According Iriawan, the commitment of the demonstrators also will be ended as permitted hours, even faster after representatives submit a petition to the representative of Indonesian President Joko Widodo at the State Palace.

"As the deadline until 06:00 pm, hopefully the demonstration could be dissolved because the goal of how petitions could be received by representative of government or president," said Iriawan.

He has prepared a number of troops in anticipation of protesters coming from outside the Jakarta City. He also ensured that the police force will be deployed will persuasive in escorting the demonstrators.

"We also have 300 policewomen to sweeten. We have troops who have the ability to recite the remembrance of Allah (berdzikir) as much as 500 personnel," he said.
