REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PASURUAN - A 21-kilogram male calf from the breeding of female Balinese cow (Bos javanicus f. domestica) and male Javanese ox (Bos javanicus) was born for the first time in Taman Safari Indonesia (TSI) II Prigen, Pasuruan, East Java, on April 5.
Initiated by East Java Governor Soekarwo, the breeding is the cooperation between Breeding Department of East Java and TSI II Prigen. The baby, named Sapi Dewo, is now being treated intensively in quarantine cage of TSI Prigen.
The Manager of TSI II Prigen, Tommy Sands Wungkar, on Saturday said the female cow was one from 10 Balinese cow crossed with Javanese bull in TSI Prigen. The crossing is an effort to increase the genetic quality and the productivity of Balinese beef.
The animal curator of TSI II Prigen, Ivan Chandra, said the breeding could produce high quality cattle. The Bali cow usually suffers the decreasing quality due to long time inbreeding. He predicts the breeding can produce 450 kilogram cow which is bigger than the usual size of 300 kilogram.
He added, the new cow inherits the Javanese ox that immune to Jembrana virus, the main problem in Bali. The new variant obtains the high reproduction and good adaptation from Bali cow. Imagine, how would you call the crossbred?
