REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Some 170 district heads in Indonesia are being questioned by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) over their involvement in various corruption cases. "We are now focusing on the investigation process," KPK Corruption Prevention Unit spokesman Dedi Rahim said here on Thursday.

"Corruption happens because of bureaucrats` inability to manage the district`s finances. Therefore, it is KPK`s duty to monitor and correct their negative behaviour," he added.

Among the corruption cases being currently investigated by the KPK are those involving: Buol district (Central Sulawesi) head Amran Batalipu and noted businesswoman Hartati Murdaya; the former governor of Riau Islands province, Ismeth Abdullah; and the former governor of North Sumatra, Syamsul Arifin.
